Largest mass grave in Europe

Largest mass grave in Europe

In spring 2024, archaeologist Willem De Cuyper of AquaTerra Archaeology bv participated in an excavation led by In Terra Veritas GmbH in Nuremberg, Germany. During the investigation, one of the largest known plague mass graves in Europe was uncovered. It is believed that the people buried here died between 1533 and 1634, probably during one of the major plague outbreaks.

Willem worked for four months on this extraordinary project. Due to the confidential nature of the research, no further details can be shared at this time. For more information, please contact the local Nuremberg heritage office or In Terra Veritas GmbH.
